S.E.M., Vol. 1, No. 6

The President's Duty to Faithfully Execute the Law. According to Art. II, Sect. 3 of the Constitution, what is the President's duty? According to Lincoln, what does a man trample on, when he tramples on the law? According to Rep. Goodlatte, what is the value of strictly observing even bad laws until they are repealed? In a republic, why else, in your opinion, is obedience to laws put in place according to the process outlined in the Constitution, regardless of our personal opinions, important, if not vital?

The Red Carpet — Ezra Taft Benson

Prophet Statesmen, Volume I, No. 52, Benson

Excerpts from address by Ezra Taft Benson given at Brigham Young University, March 28, 1962; and from his 1962 book, “The Red Carpet,” p. 65-83.

It is high time we realized the dangerous threat to America of creeping socialism as the ruthless comrade to atheistic communism.

It is high time that we recognize creeping socialism for what it really is—a Red Carpet providing a royal road to communism.

A few months before coming to the United States Khrushchev is reported to have said:

We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism, until they suddenly awake to find they have communism . . . .

I say again, communism is freedom’s most dangerous enemy; the threat of communism in America is real, and I believe in all seriousness that socialism paves the way for communism. Truly, in our land, our choice land of America, we are laying the Red Carpet, which permits creeping socialism to be America’s “royal road” to communism.

Let us never forget that today we are in the biggest battle ever staged. Our opponent is socialism—the welfare state—and the penalty of failure is enslavement. We must keep strong spiritually, morally, and economically as individuals, families, communities, and as a nation. Only in this course is safety.

Ezra Taft Benson served as thirteenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as Secretary of Agriculture for both terms of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency.
