Better Proposals for Health Care — Phyllis Schlafly

by Phyllis Schlafly

President Obama declared in his State of the Union Address: “If anyone from either party has a better approach [for health care reform] . . . let me know! I am eager to see it.” Well, Mr. President, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann does have better health care proposals, and most of her suggestions are contained in various bills that have been pending in Congress for months! Here are some of her suggestions for REAL health care reform:

  • Protect the vital doctor-patient relationship (that means, don’t require health-care decisions to be made by government bureaucrats);
  • Reject any addition to the crushing national debt heaped on all Americans;
  • Improve, rather than diminish, the quality of care that Americans enjoy;
  • Have new congressional legislation negotiated publicly, transparently, with genuine accountability and oversight, and free from political favoritism;
  • Treat private citizens at least as well as political officials (that means, give us as good health insurance as the Congressmen give themselves);
  • Protect taxpayers from being forced to pay for abortions (as the Senate bill would do);
  • Reject all new mandates on patients, employers, individuals, and states (in contrast to the current bills that force individuals and employers to buy insurance they can’t afford);
  • Prohibit expansion of taxpayer-funded health care to those unlawfully present in the United States (that means don’t make us pay for insurance for illegal aliens);
  • Guarantee Equal Protection under the law and the Constitution;
  • Empower, rather than limit, an open and accessible marketplace of health care choice and opportunity (that means, allow us to buy insurance across state lines).

These proposals were recently spelled out by Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota in a Declaration of Health Care Independence. They should serve as the guidelines for passing any meaningful health care reform. As Rep. Bachmann explains, “This is a roadmap of the [health care] rules going forward.”
