Apocalypse Now — Phil Brennan

Perspectives With Phil Brennan
Informed Views from Outside the Beltway

Many decades ago, in the 30s when I was a student at St. Francis of Assisi school in Brooklyn, our two-fisted eighth grade teacher known not quite affectionately as “Sister Slug” warned us that we would live to see the United States as we knew it overcome by communist tyranny, namely from the Soviet Union.

In the wake of the House passage of the healthcare deform bill Sunday, when the Congress of the United States in their wisdom defied the will of a majority of Americans and voted that monstrosity into law it became clear that the ultimate enemy of the American people was not the foreign foe envisioned by Sister, but the government of the United States under its present leadership in the White House and on Capitol Hill.

The media angrily reacts when foes of the Obama administration call it a socialist regime, as indeed many of them did during their coverage of Sunday’s anti-health care deform bill demonstrations, and that is clearly due to the fact that many of them in the media are themselves conscious or unconscious committed Marxists hiding under the liberal label.

Being of glorious Irish lineage, like my fellow Hibernians I tend to struggle to find a ray of sunshine under the gloomiest clouds, but strive as I may, I can’t discern a single beam of light in the present political climate.

Unlike many of my fellow conservatives who look to the coming congressional elections in November as a golden opportunity to drive the barbarians from Capitol Hill, I am convinced that the Obama White House will find a way, by hook or by crook, to preserve their majorities in both the House and Senate. I put nothing past them. Picture armed leftist activists standing guard over polling places as we saw on one occasion on election day, 2008. They are clearly determined to change the very nature and structure of the United States of America and will let nothing – neither law, nor tradition, nor the inherent rights of the American people stand in their way.

Obama is fully aware of the powers available to the occupant of the White House and has shown himself prepared to use all of them to their fullest extent, and beyond, to achieve his sinister goals. He has a vision of an America vastly different from that of its founders and of that of the majority of the American people, and is ready to implement it by whatever means necessary. The vote in the Congress over the past weekend is merely one step in the process of transforming the land of the free and the home of the brave into the land of the timid and the home of the utterly dependent.

Barack Obama took the measure of the majority of members of the Congress of the United States and found them malleable to his will. He bribed them with goodies paid for with your tax dollars or intimidated them by displaying or using his vast executive powers, and he had is way with them.

His policies have driven a dagger through our free enterprise economy. leaving it a bleeding corpse. A nation that soared to undreampt of heights thanks to the blessings of economic freedom unhampered by meddlesome government is to be reborn as a stepchild of big brotherism.

The structure built by the founders – a structure of three equal branches of the federal government capable of preventing any one branch from becoming a threat to the other two, or to the rights and liberties of the people, has collapsed under the weight of rampant corruption and self-interest.

The fatal blow may not have been delivered by the hand of a Soviet, but Sister was right.
