The Wide Margin — J. Reuben Clark Jr.

Liberty Letters Quote of the Day, J. Reuben Clark Jr.

Tradition has it that Solon, the great law-giver declared in reply to the taunt “Are these the best laws you can devise?” No! but they are the best the Greeks can bear!”

There is always a wide margin between the theoretically perfect and the practically enforceable law.

J. Reuben Clark Jr. (1871–1961), served as a member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1931–1961. Prior to his full-time church service he was assistant solicitor to the State Department, worked in the Attorney General’s office, Under Secretary of State, the author of the classic study, the “Clark Memorandum on the Monroe Doctrine” and U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Among those who knew his work best, J. Reuben Clark was recognized as the foremost constitutional scholar of the 20th Century.

Notice: We encourage our writers & readers to focus their comments on principles & issues (pro and con) rather than on personal character attacks or party against party politics; and to point to solutions where possible. Ugly, emotional comments (especially profanity) are discouraged, will be edited or removed, and may lead to the permanent removal of its author from our community of friends. As a private enterprise we claim the right of offering something unique in politics. Please help us keep it that way. If you feel any writer or community member is consistently violating this standard, please let me know. -- Best to you, Steve Farrell, Editor In Chief
