Federalist 58 by James Madison. 1. Under the proposed Constitution whose interests were represented by the U.S. Senate? Is it so today? If not, how might it be remedied & by what means? 2. How did the Constitution provide for updating representation in Congress? 3. Madison credits the U.S Constitution with assigning the greatest power, that of the “purse strings” to the U.S. House. In your opinion, how might the House assert that power to reduce the size & cost of government today? 4. Explain in your own words Madison’s warning against too many men serving in the House. How might his warning be applied today as calls abound for a more direct democracy & for scrapping the electoral college system? 5. Is democracy the form of government our Founders gave us or was it a republican form? Explain the difference.

Rick Santorum drops out of GOP race

NEWSROOM AMERICA

Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum suspended his campaign Tuesday, which will likely leave the path to the nomination wide open for frontrunner Mitt Romney.

He said the illness of his 3-year-old daughter Bella gave him cause to pause and think over the Easter weekend. Bella, who suffers from a genetic condition called Trisomy 18, has now been released from hospital after falling ill over the weekend.

Mr Santorum says Good Friday was “a passion play” for his family with the illness of Bella.

He said his family made the decision to suspend his campaign over the kitchen table, which was the same place they decided last year to run.

“While this presidential race for us is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting.

“We are going to continue to fight for those voices, we are going to continue to fight for those Americans who stood up and gave us that air under our wings that allowed us to accomplish things that no political expert would ever have expected,” he said.

During his speech, Mr Santorum did not endorse any other candidate.

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich remain in the hunt, but are statistically out of securing the necessary 1,144 delegates to secure the nomination.
