Federalist 58 by James Madison. 1. Under the proposed Constitution whose interests were represented by the U.S. Senate? Is it so today? If not, how might it be remedied & by what means? 2. How did the Constitution provide for updating representation in Congress? 3. Madison credits the U.S Constitution with assigning the greatest power, that of the “purse strings” to the U.S. House. In your opinion, how might the House assert that power to reduce the size & cost of government today? 4. Explain in your own words Madison’s warning against too many men serving in the House. How might his warning be applied today as calls abound for a more direct democracy & for scrapping the electoral college system? 5. Newsweek Cover Calls Obama First ‘Gay President’

Barack Obama: The First "Gay President"

NEWSROOM AMERICA

Newsweek magazine has featured a picture of President Barack Obama on its cover this week adorned with a rainbow-colored halo and headline saying, “The First Gay President.”

Likely meant to showcase the president’s recent announced support for gay marriage – a position he said came about through “evolution” – the cover has caused instant controversy.

The cover story was written by avowed homosexual Andrew Sullivan, who is a self-described political conservative. In it he analyzes Obama’s decision.

Obama’s reversal comes six months before the presidential election. Critics have called it less of an “evolution” and more of a calculated political gambit to shore up his left-wing base.

The president’s view is 180 degrees opposite of likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who reiterated on Saturday that he believes “marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.”
